Passage: Psalm 119: 33-40
Psalm 119:33–40 ESV
Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end. Give me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with my whole heart. Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it. Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain! Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways. Confirm to your servant your promise, that you may be feared. Turn away the reproach that I dread, for your rules are good. Behold, I long for your precepts; in your righteousness give me life!
Prayer by Caleb Sherwood
TRANSITION - MAIN MESSAGE
INTRO/LAST WEEK RECAP:
It is truly an honor to be with you all tonight… I am always encouraged to see you guys and count it a blessing to be your youth pastor
I love to opening up God’s Word with you and I missed not gathering with you all last week
However, two weeks ago, we were in the Book of Jonah and examined Jonah 3:10
We saw the people of Ninevah turning away from their sin and truly displaying a heart and posture of repenetance towards God for all the evil they had committed and done in their lives…
Because of this genuine repentance… God forgave them of their sins… because he is merciful… compassionate… and loves saving lost sinners like you and me…
TRANSISTION - JONAH 4:1-4
This week we are continuing our journey through the book of Jonah… I invite you to turn to Jonah chapter 4…
And if you are willing and physically able to stand… would you stand with me as I read Jonah 4:1-4 in honor and respect of God’s Word…
Jonah 4:1–4 ESV
But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry. And he prayed to the Lord and said, “O Lord, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and ABOUNDING in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster. Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.” And the Lord said, “Do you do well to be angry?”
POINT #1: God’s love ABOUNDS… it will never RUNOUT
One of the lies the enemy… the devil will try to get you to believe one of two lies:
1.) If you are a Christian… God could never truly love someone who has messed up like you… after all he is perfect, he has never messed up, and he sees every flaw… so how could he love you
2.) You have messed up too many times since being saved… he is getting tired of loving someone like you… you only get some many chances… I mean how many times are you going to keep messing up like that… over and over again in the same way…
*The devil… the great liar and deceiver… wants you to think and believe that God’s LOVE IS LIMITED… WHY?
Because at the CORE of who God is… at his Center… his acts… his deeds… the reason why he created us… the reason why he saves us… the reason why he wants to spend eternity with us… is because HE LOVES US…
GOD IS LOVE…
If the enemy can get you to question God’s love for you… then he can distort and dismantle and dilute the main characteristic of who God is - LOVE
In other words, if you question whether or not someone loves you… then all other attributes become unstable… or uncertain…
For example… you trust those who you know truly love you
You follow the leadership of those who truly love you
Who listen to the ones who truly love you
You scarifice your time, energy, and money for those you truly love
In other words, you arent going to trust, listen, obey, or follow God if you dont know or believe that he loves you ALWAYS and that this love ABOUNDS and will never runout…
HIGHLIGHT… CIRCLE… UNDERLINE
*The Word ABOUNDING in Jonah 4:1-4
1.) ABOUNDING = Relatively large in size and number or extent; larger than others of its kind”
The same word Abounding can be exchanged or replaced with the word “Great”
For example this same word is found in Isaiah 51:10… which says…
See Isaiah 51:10
Isaiah 51:10 ESV
Was it not you who dried up the sea, the waters of the great deep, who made the depths of the sea a way for the redeemed to pass over?
In other words, God is saying… my love for you is abounding like the depths of the ocean…
… The deepest part of the ocean is called the “Challengers Deep” in the western pacific ocean…
from the top of the water to where the water meets the ocean floor is about 11,000 meters or 36,000 feet… more than 7 miles down… exceeding the height of mount Everest…
I hope you see the connection… In Jonah 4… God is saying the depth of my love for will not run dry or runout… like the depth of the ocean in Isaiah 51:10
The same abounding and steadfast love that God showed those who lived in Nineveh is the same abounding love that he offers you today…
Question: How do you view God’s Love towards you? Do you think God loves you? Do you thin you deserve God to love you? Do you struggle to accept the reality that God’s love for you is not based upon how good you are… that it is not conditional? What lies about God love are you believing that the enemy has tried to convince you of?

What else is this passage trying to teach us or show us that we can apply to our lives today?
POINT #2: ANGER is on OUTWARD Expression of the HEARTS unmet EXPECTATION
At the very end of verse 4… God asks Jonah a very interesting question… he asks him… “Do you do well to be ANGERY?
ANGRY = to be or become angry and feel aversion, hatred, loathing, and antipathy - a deep-seated feeling of dislike for something
Jonah makes it clear in this passage that the reason he did not want to go to Nineveh was because he did not want the people there to be saved… because he knew that God is loving, merciful, and abounding in steadfast love…
Jonah was angry towards those people in Nineveh and he did not want them to experience the grace and mercy of God…
The expectations… what Jonah had desired in his heart.. was to see these people be condemned and punished for their sins… when God did not meet those expectations… when the desires of Jonah’s heart were not met… he outwardly expresses his Anger and unmet expectation…
I don’t want you to miss this… Your ANGER will only leave and BITTER… BLIND… and in BONDAGE…
ANGER elevates your expectation and demands on others… Blinds you to what God is trying to show you… and leaves you in Bondage - unable to let go of what others have done and unable to think that Gods outcome is better than what you thought or wanted
The question that God asks Jonah is the same question he is asking you and me…
Hey… How is that going for you? How is holding on that Anger going? Is that Anger bringing you true peace, joy, and happiness?
Some of you truly do struggle with ANGER…
Anger is not always a loud outburst… it starts a deeply rooted seed that grows over time and lodges itself in your heart…
Some of you have been deeply wounded by others… some of you hold God responsible for the hurt and pain you have experienced…
Some of you like the feeling of getting anger because you are so hurt and num from pain that this life has brought
I don’t know the exact reason why some of you struggle with anger… but I do know that all our anger originates from the same place… the unmet expectations that we have in our hearts…
Question; What are the unmet expectations that others or God has not met in your life that causes you to get, be, or harbor anger?
If you struggle with Anger… ask God to change the expectations of your heart and demands of others… and to be fulfilled by God and have the same desires as him…
